How to Bleed Your Radiator Step by Step
When you bleed a radiator, you help release air trapped inside, allowing hot water to flow evenly. This makes your central heating system more effective and reduces strain on your boiler.

Bleeding radiators is a maintenance task most homeowners can do themselves in just a few minutes, with no specialist tools required.
But before you begin, it’s important to remember that radiator bleeding is something you should do with sufficient care. While it’s generally straightforward, hot water can escape during the process, so safety is key.
With that in mind, you’ll need the following:
- Radiator key – a small, inexpensive tool available from DIY stores.
- Old cloth or rag – to catch drips and protect flooring.
- Small bowl or container – for any escaping water.
- Protective gloves – to keep your hands safe from hot surfaces.

Step 1: Switch Off Your Heating and Let It Cool
Before you touch the radiators, turn off your central heating system and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes. This prevents scalding and ensures you’re not working against the system’s water pressure while it’s running.
Step 2: Locate the Bleed Valve
Each radiator has a small bleed valve, usually found at the top corner. It’s a small square-shaped opening designed to be turned with a radiator key. Position your cloth or bowl underneath the valve to catch any water that escapes during bleeding.
Step 3: Turn the Radiator Key Slowly
Insert the radiator key into the valve and turn it anti-clockwise – just enough for the trapped air to begin escaping. You’ll hear a distinct hissing sound as the air releases. Keep the valve partially open until water (rather than air) starts to flow steadily.
Step 4: Close the Valve Firmly
Once you see water coming out without spurts of air, turn the key clockwise to close the valve. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the fitting. Use your cloth to wipe away any drips to prevent rust spots on the radiator.
Step 5: Check Your Boiler Pressure and Restart Heating
After bleeding all the radiators you need, check your boiler’s pressure gauge. Bleeding releases air but can also lower the system’s water pressure. If it’s dropped below the recommended level (usually around 1.0–1.5 bar when cold), you may need to top it up via your boiler’s filling loop. Once pressure is restored, switch your heating back on and check that all radiators are heating evenly from top to bottom.
