After much thought and consideration about the future and how we can continue to grow our services, Moorland Heating have taken an exciting first step into the world of air conditioning installation in Plymouth and the surrounding areas of Devon and Cornwall.
Not only can we help you heat your home in the winter with central heating, boiler installation, servicing, and repairs, but now we will be able to keep you cool during the summer. (Perhaps we should rebrand to Moorland Heating & Cooling!?)
The Rise in Demand for Air Conditioning in Plymouth
With the hottest days on record in June 2026, it will come as no surprise that, due to the recent hot weather we’ve been experiencing in the summer, there has been a massive increase and an unprecedented demand for air conditioning installation in Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall, and across the UK. According to the Guardian, 48% of people in Britain were in favour of allowing and encouraging more widespread adoption of air conditioning.
That’s why we’re here to assist! With so many of you struggling to stay cool and comfortable in this heat, we wanted to help homeowners so you’re no longer struggling to sleep at night because you’re too hot or sweating in your home with the curtains closed during the day.
Building Our Knowledge About Air Conditioning Units
We recently spent a day at our local training centre, where we gained valuable insight into how air conditioning systems work, the fundamentals of refrigeration, and what’s involved in the installation, commissioning, and servicing of air conditioning units.
The training day gave us the opportunity to get hands-on with the basics and develop a better understanding of the technology behind modern air conditioning systems.
From understanding the refrigeration cycle to learning about the key components within an air conditioning unit, it was a really useful introduction to an area we’re looking forward to developing further.
We also explored the installation and servicing process, giving us a clearer picture of the skills and knowledge required to provide a professional air conditioning service.
The Next Step: F-Gas Training
Our journey doesn’t stop there.
We’re now booked onto our F-Gas course, which is an important next step towards developing the qualifications and expertise needed to work with air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Once we have completed the necessary training and qualifications, our aim is to be able to offer air conditioning installation and maintenance as part of our services in the near future throughout Plymouth and the surrounding areas.
What is F-Gas Certification & Why Does It Matter?
F-Gas certification is the UK’s legal qualification for anyone installing, servicing, or handling air conditioning systems that use fluorinated refrigerant gases. In order for us to carry out your air conditioning installation, we must hold F-Gas certification to legally work on the system, alongside Part P certification for the electrical work.
This isn’t an optional qualification – we need to get it right the first time round to ensure your safety and our compliance with legal requirements when working with refrigerant gases.
Do I Need Planning Permission for an Air Conditioning Installation in Devon or Cornwall?
For most houses, you don’t typically need planning permission for an air conditioning installation in Plymouth, Devon or Cornwall.
Under the General Permitted Development Order, an outdoor condenser unit on a house is treated the same as an air source heat pump – it can be up to 1.5m³ on a house, with detached properties allowing up to two units and semi-detached or terraced houses just one.
However, the unit must be reversible (providing both heating and cooling.) Cooling-only units always require planning permission, regardless of their size or positioning around your home. Additionally, flats, listed buildings, and conservation areas are subject to stricter rules and tend to require more paperwork.
